What a Lamp Shade Is Used For
While lamp shades are one small part of lighting, their importance is often overlooked. Knowing the purpose of a lamp shade can allow you to use them thoughtfully as part of your interior design. Here are a few of the different ways lamp shades are used:
- Decor: The shape and material also provide a decorative aspect to a room. Certain shapes of lamp shades complement the shape of their lamp base. The color and texture of a lampshade's material can also determine the amount of light it diffuses and can even slightly change the color emitted through it.
- Eye Protection: Primarily, lampshades are used to cover exposed light bulbs that would otherwise cause strain on your eyes from their brightness. Depending on their material, they also soften the harshness of your lights to different degrees.
- Light Direction: Depending on its shape, a lamp shade also helps direct light to different areas of a room. For example, a lampshade with a flared bottom will send plenty of light to a wide area below it, while one with a wider top will send more light toward the ceiling. Take advantage of these differences to create fantastic effects in your home.
- Ambiance: When thoughtfully matched with the right light placed in just the right area, a lamp shade can help create the perfect atmosphere in a room.
Our Lampshades By Lighting, Fitting, & Type
At Lamps Plus, We have many different types of lamp shades to choose from. Since our shop is so immense, let's simplify things by breaking down the many variations of lamp shades and describing what makes them so different.
By Lighting
Lampshades differ in dimension depending on the light fixture they're meant to cover. The shade is meant to fit the size or style of the fixture. Here are the three main lamp shade types we offer according to lighting:
- Chandelier Lamp Shades — Lampshades for chandeliers are usually very small — around 3 to 7 inches in bottom width — because they cover each individual bulb rather than the entirety of the fixture. While there are some exceptions, we have many chandelier lamp shade sets in various elegant and simple designs. Additionally, to simplify fitting and removing them, consider our collection of clip-on chandelier lampshades.
- Table Lamp Shades — Table lamp shades come in a wide range of sizes, from 8 to over 17 inches in bottom width, as they are among the most common types of lamps available. Smaller sizes below 13 inches are for bedroom or office table lamps. Shades up to 16 inches are for medium-sized lamps in more open-floor rooms. The biggest table lamp shades, at 17 inches and over, are for larger and more ornate table lamps.
- Floor Lamp Shades — Because they are made to provide a large amount of accent lighting for big rooms, floor lamps typically have the largest lamp shades available, often over 17 inches in bottom width.
By Type
Our range of lampshades can also be divided according to the type of design or material they are made from. Here are some of the different types of lamp shades we offer:
- Art Shade — Our Art Shades don't just add a signature touch. They come in a variety of creative and interesting designs exclusive to Lamps Plus. These shades are made-to-order and printed on high-quality canvas using a high-resolution Giclee printing process. So, if you want to refine your room's style to be one-of-a-kind, consider our collection of Art Shades.
- Pleated — Timeless and able to seamlessly fit into nearly any interior style, pleated lamp shades often provide plenty of coverage and diffused light. Whether you want your room to be minimalist, Scandinavian, modern, or traditional, pleated shades easily fit them all.
- Rattan — Better known as "wicker," rattan lamp shades create a warm, natural ambiance as they diffuse a large amount of light from your fixture. They also complement a more laidback and eclectic interior design.
- Scalloped — Because their edges are made with wavy curves, scalloped lamp shades are named for resembling a scallop's shell. These shades are classics and fit perfectly for traditional and elegantly modern interiors.
- Pendant — Meant to cover a single-hanging bulb, pendant light shades help shape the style and function of the pendant light you are working with..
How to Pick Lamp Shades
Selecting the right lampshades for your light fixtures involves considering a few key elements:
Lamp Base or Fixture
First and foremost, the lamp shade you select should seamlessly match your lamp base fixture. For example, if you have a lamp with a curved base shape, you'll want to match it with a shade that has a similarly curved, rounded design, such as a bell or drum-shaped lamp shade.
On the other hand, if your lamp base has more straight lines or angles, you'll want an empire or rectangular shade for it. Keeping the lamp base and shade consistent ensures a seamless design.
That said, we aren't against trying out contrasting shapes, in fact, we've encouraged experimenting with lampshades before. Just be sure they complement each other well.
Top Width
The top opening of a lamp shade is important because it affects how light is distributed upwards. A wider top allows more light to escape, providing ambient illumination, while a narrower top focuses light downward.
Lamps meant to light larger rooms do well with shades that have larger top widths, while those in smaller, more personal spaces, like your bedroom, could do with narrower top widths.
Bottom Width
The bottom diameter of a lamp shade also greatly affects the lamp's overall proportion and light diffusion. As a general guideline, the shade's bottom width should be approximately twice the width of the lamp base. This ensures stability and aesthetic balance.
Moreover, the wider the bottom width, the more downward light casts below it. This helps provide a warm, relaxed aesthetic in larger rooms or additional task lighting for office desks or bedside table lamps.
Height
The height of a lampshade is crucial for both its appearance and function. A well-sized shade typically has a height of about two-thirds the height of the lamp base. This proportion helps keep the lamp shade and base cohesive and prevents your shade from covering too much or too little of your fixture's light.
By carefully considering these aspects, you'll be able to select a lamp shade that perfectly complements your lights and enhances your interior décor.
